Davao continues to flourish with a wealth of attractive investment and business opportunities with its numerous major infrastructure developments. For example, improvements on international airport, construction of a bypass road, and modernization of an existing port.
In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Mindanao remains to be at the “front and center” of the government’s infrastructure program, said Department of Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III in a virtual business conference in 2020. Last year, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade also mentioned that they were at the “forefront of building and developing transport infrastructure projects in Mindanao.”

Establishing Ports as one of the Major Infrastructure Developments in Davao
1. Davao International Airport Development Project
The P40.57 billion project that aims to develop the country’s third busiest airport into a world-class domestic and international hub is still in the project procurement phase, according to the Build, Build, Build website. Last year, Tugade said that some works had been accomplished in the airport such as the construction of covered walkway, concrete topping of roof deck, waterproofing of selected areas, etc. He also added that they had completed two airport development projects in Davao Oriental.
2. Davao Sasa Port Modernization Project
This project aims to develop the Davao Sasa Port into a “modern, international-standard container terminal” to improve trade access and spur economic growth in Mindanao, according to the Public-Private Partnership Center.

3. Davao City Bypass Construction Project
This project aims to develop the Davao Sasa Port into a “modern, international-standard container terminal” to improve trade access and spur economic gThe P19.8 billion project includes the construction of a 45.5-kilometer 4-lane bypass road that is set to cut the usual travel time from 1 hour and 44 minutes (via Pan Philippine Highway and Diversion Road) to around 49 minutes (via Davao Bypass Road).
It will start in Barangay Sirawan in Toril, Davao City, to Barangay J.P. Laurel in Panabo City. According to Dominguez, the bypass road project also involves a 2.3-kilometer mountain tunnel that links Barangay Matina Biao and Barangay Waan in Davao City. The Finance chief said that the government signed a loan agreement with the Japanese government for the project’s second phase. Hence, it is expected to be operational by 2023.
4. Davao City Coastal Road Project
The P26-billion project seeks to address the traffic congestion in the downtown area of the city. Reports show that the 18.50-kilometer Davao City Coastal Road will include bike lanes of around two meters in width that will soon give cyclists a lovely view of the Davao Gulf. Jogging lanes with one meter width are also available in the project. This is according to DPWH-Davao Region Public Affairs and Information Officer Dean Ortiz.
5. Davao Public Transport Modernization Project
The P18.66-billion project aims to give an “efficient and affordable mode of transport for Davaoeños through the delivery of a modern High Priority Bus System,” as stated in the DOTr website. The project has three components: public transport system improvement, institutional capacity strengthening, and social development program. Reports say that once finished, it can benefit up to 800,000 passengers a day. DOTr Secretary Tugade said last year that commute will be fully operational by the third quarter of 2023.
There are important infrastructure projects in the region. First is the Miranda Bridge II in Davao del Norte. Likewise, there is the first phase of the Mindanao Railway Project (Tagum-Davao-Digos segment). Next, they have the 1.035-kilometer Tagum City Flyover (dubbed as “Mindanao’s longest flyover”). Then, there is the P69-billion Davao Expressway Project. Other projects include Davao-Samal Bridge Project and Mindanao Logistics Infrastructure Network. Finally, a 55-km Davao City Bike Lane Network and Asbang Small Reservoir Irrigation Project in Davao del Sur.
